Yeah, so i've been quite absent and barely here over the last few months which is down to some super bad morning sickness! (whoever gave it that name I curse you as this is vile!)

We're both super thrilled and excited, but it really has eaten into any motivation I've had for creating new artwork. I'm just taking it easy at the moment - so i'm really sorry if I've not been able to answer any comments or messages! I am still here!

I'm starting to feel a little better so I'm hopefully past the worst of it, just trying to get my strength back up.

I won't be taking on any new projects, commercial or personal for the foreseeable future.

I will see how inktober goes - wish me luck!! :D

FAQ

4 min read
I feel like I should finally get round to having an FAQ which is easy for people to find answers to stuff and to try and cut down on some questions I get. I try and answer everybody, but I know some can get missed! If there's anything here missing just let me know and I'll be sure to get it added :D

Can I use your art for my fanfiction/signature/etc?
As long as it's not for profit in any way, you are fine to use my art on the condition that you link back to me and do not cut off any watermark. If you are after anything for commercial use then you need to get in touch with me directly.

Are you open for commissions?
I try and keep personal commissions open always. You can see my info here - Commissions - WAITLIST AVAILABLEUPDATED NOVEMBER 2022 - Commissions have now been re-opened. Are you interested in taking on a commercial project?
Firstly - please be serious about pricing! My work can range from 6 - 30 hours work so please keep that in mind. I am usually always open to hearing about new commercial projects, exclusive and non-exclusive - schedule depending. I am NOT interested in diamond painting!

Do you take requests/art trades?
I don't really have time for these, sorry! Although feel free to suggest ideas. If I do have free time and like the idea I may be able to give it a go at some point.

What software do you use?
I use Photoshop and have a Wacom Cintiq 13HD

What brushes do you use
I mainly use standard round photoshop default brushes for the majority of painting, however I do have a vast collection of custom brushes! The overwhelming majority I have collected over the years are free brushes put up from lovely DA users, and I edit and change them to suit certain situations. You can browse through just by searching for photoshop brushes in the search bar. The paid brushes I have are Grut Brushes, but I don't use them too often.

I'm a beginner digital artist. How did you go about learning?
I started from the very bottom (as everyone does!) and still have so much to learn about and more skills to develop (again, as everyone does. Learning never stops!) The best advice I can give people is to just keep painting, keep experimenting and keep referencing! A lot of it is training your eye into seeing as an artist, noticing the colour variations and learning and understanding why. I find it absolutely fascinating how my artistic eye has developed over the years. I still have a long way to go but that's what's so exciting!

ALSO - be careful with your hands!! LOOK AFTER THEM!! Break regularly - stretch regularly! (I cannot ever stress this enough)

Years ago I always used to struggle with the concept of a 'style', something which made your work instantly recognizable and was unique to you. It took me years of searching and feeling inadequate, until I came to the realization that to be able to find a style and progress as an artist, I needed to completely forget about such a concept. Trying to be creative and grow, but restricting yourself to this makeshift box of a style is totally self limiting and can be destructive. Without any bounds, you are free to experiment, try new things and above all, improve.

Because of this, I can imagine I have very varied watchers! Haha. One of the things that used to affect me years ago, which I can imagine many people on DA can relate to, is tending to fall into the trap of seeing which of your art pieces have done well on DA, and trying to replicate them, or do something similar. And then suddenly, you feel you can't try anything different as if ever you do, they don't get as much attention. This then leads to stagnation and prevents growth. I see a few artists like this and it hurts to see them stuck in a cycle without progressing.

But then again, it depends on what you create art for. Art is a form of expression and is unique to the individual.

Anyway - my main thought here is what my wonderful watchers actually watch me for? I am so incredibly grateful for all the support I get and cannot thank you all enough! I adore being able to paint everyday and strive to better myself always.

(In other news my hands are still messed up, but I'm beginning to understand tendon problems are just an occupational hazard of being an artist! Getting physio next week which should hopefully start sorting them out properly!)

I've been a bit absent from DA these past few weeks, and this has been down to suspected Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in both of my hands! I had to make this journal, firstly to let you guys know I'm still here and also to raise awareness about this as it's not fun, it's something that's easily triggered, easily ignored, and then will plague you for months. I think it's quite common among artists, and even if you end up with a standard desk job, bad posture and ergonomics are a recipe for it!

I started getting pain in my right hand back in October. I was actually reading something on my phone that I couldn't put down, and I just completely ignored the pain and carried on, until it got quite unbearable. Then, rather than do something about it, I just switched hands!

I believe that was the initial cause, but then all day every day, I used my hands -
Painting - hands
General pc use - hands
Phone - hands
Gaming - hands
Learning the flute - hands!

I never used to just sit and watch tv! And other than getting out and about, I was really overusing my hands. But again, I just tried to persevere, not going to the doctors, trying to deal with it myself but I wasn't really limiting my activity which is the main thing you need to do. At the end of December it got super bad, so I was serious and completely cut off from doing a lot of stuff, started taking Turmeric for inflammation, Glucosamine and stuff for tendons, and then a high dose 100mg of vitamin B6 as this is supposed to help nerves, which is what carpal tunnel is. I've been doing hand exercises everyday, even shoulder and back exercises in case the nerve is being squashed somewhere higher up. I've completely changed my desk setup, have got an ergonomic mouse, etc. I've seen my GP who's getting me a nerve conduction appointment to know where the nerve problem is, and I think the next step is steroid injections.

But I must say, I am a lot better now then 2 weeks ago, and I do think the rest and particularly the vitamin B6 has helped a lot. It's still there, but I am able to use the pc again now, as long as I take regular breaks. I'm not in constant pain! Ive actually finally started painting again a couple of days ago!

Probably still got a way to go, but yeah... if you get hand pain... STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!! Please take it seriously. If I had just stopped, and didn't force through the pain I wouldn't be with this issue right now. I'm in my 20s, and never had any nerve or hand issues before.

If I've been a bit flaky with replying to people, I really apologise. I won't be able to reply consistently until my hands are back to normal.

Now I need to take a 30 minute break and stretch!!!
