I've been a bit absent from DA these past few weeks, and this has been down to suspected Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in both of my hands! I had to make this journal, firstly to let you guys know I'm still here and also to raise awareness about this as it's not fun, it's something that's easily triggered, easily ignored, and then will plague you for months. I think it's quite common among artists, and even if you end up with a standard desk job, bad posture and ergonomics are a recipe for it!
I started getting pain in my right hand back in October. I was actually reading something on my phone that I couldn't put down, and I just completely ignored the pain and carried on, until it got quite unbearable. Then, rather than do something about it, I just switched hands!
I believe that was the initial cause, but then all day every day, I used my hands -
Painting - hands
General pc use - hands
Phone - hands
Gaming - hands
Learning the flute - hands!
I never used to just sit and watch tv! And other than getting out and about, I was really overusing my hands. But again, I just tried to persevere, not going to the doctors, trying to deal with it myself but I wasn't really limiting my activity which is the main thing you need to do. At the end of December it got super bad, so I was serious and completely cut off from doing a lot of stuff, started taking Turmeric for inflammation, Glucosamine and stuff for tendons, and then a high dose 100mg of vitamin B6 as this is supposed to help nerves, which is what carpal tunnel is. I've been doing hand exercises everyday, even shoulder and back exercises in case the nerve is being squashed somewhere higher up. I've completely changed my desk setup, have got an ergonomic mouse, etc. I've seen my GP who's getting me a nerve conduction appointment to know where the nerve problem is, and I think the next step is steroid injections.
But I must say, I am a lot better now then 2 weeks ago, and I do think the rest and particularly the vitamin B6 has helped a lot. It's still there, but I am able to use the pc again now, as long as I take regular breaks. I'm not in constant pain! Ive actually finally started painting again a couple of days ago!
Probably still got a way to go, but yeah... if you get hand pain... STOP WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!! Please take it seriously. If I had just stopped, and didn't force through the pain I wouldn't be with this issue right now. I'm in my 20s, and never had any nerve or hand issues before.
If I've been a bit flaky with replying to people, I really apologise. I won't be able to reply consistently until my hands are back to normal.
Now I need to take a 30 minute break and stretch!!!
